The first thing I had to do was think of ideas for a decal and what I could put it on. I decided on making a guitar with the mustang logo and the Bucks logo. I want to put it on my sketch book so that it has some personalized stuff included on the cover of it. I thought a decal would be perfect for this.
Process of Making the Decal
After I thought of the idea I went into Illustrator to design it and then cut it on the vinyl cutter. After I saved it I went down the the vinyl cutter and cut out all the pieces to my decal. I then weeded it so that I have just the decal left over. I did not have to weed any of the guitar because it was a solid silhouette of a guitar. After that I used transfer tape to put the mustang, or 2nd layer, on the guitar. I did the same thing for the bucks logo. Since the bucks logos were so small, one of them didn't transfer well. So I had to use only one of them. Once I finished that I put transfer tape on the whole thing and brought it home to put on my sketch book. Once I had it home I placed it on my sketch book to make it look better. That was the final step of the process.
What I learned
Since we used the vinyl cutter before I already knew a lot about it, but since this was an individual project I has to use the vinyl cutter myself. This taught me more about the process of creating a decal. I learned that you have to place the rollers on the bottoms rollers for it to work. If you do not do that the machine will not cut right. To insure that other students had time to cut out their decal too, I made it a cs6 file in the classroom before I went down to the innovation center. If I didn't take graphic design as a freshman I would've learned how to make a 2 layer decal. Since we did that in graphic design I already knew how to make this project quick and easy.
